Monday after the SAM Peru Field Conference we headed a few hours south of Lima with our friend Andrew for a daytrip to Pisco and Ica (where the earthquake occurred when we first arrived in Peru). We first went to the Islas Ballestas, which they call the poor man's Galapagos. I believe it's the place closest to the equator where you can see penguins. The islands are one of the largest producers of guano in the world and are covered with thousands of birds and sea lions.
Afterwards we went to Huacachina, an oasis just outside of Ica, and spent the afternoon riding a dune buggy in the desert and sand boarding (or sand sledding in my case).
Penguins!
